What should I expect on my first visit?
Your first session consists of a comprehensive physical evaluation with Dr. Pensavalle, a NYS licensed physical therapist since 1980. After a thorough examination, a treatment plan according to your needs and personal goals will be designed and discussed with you. Throughout your recovery process, you will be treated directly and closely supervised by Dr. Pensavalle. Further sessions typically include a combination of exercise, manual orthopaedic techniques, massage, modalities, and a home exercise program.
If you have a prescription, bring it with you.
Though most patients come to us directly from a physician’s referral and with a written prescription for PT care, in New York State, you do not need a doctor’s prescription for physical therapy during the first 30 days of treatment, but some insurance carriers may require it. If you have further questions, call our office and ask about Direct Access.
Please come to your appointment 15 minutes early so that we may introduce you to our office staff and perform any necessary administrative tasks prior to the clinical portion of your session with Dr. Pensavalle. [Click here for directions…]
What to Wear
Dress comfortably; if disrobing is necessary, we provide gowns and cover ups as needed.
What to Bring
It is very important that you bring the following information with you at your first PT session:
- PT referral from your treating physician.
- All insurance information and photo ID [Driver’s License is acceptable].
- Any and all diagnostic testing reports associated with your current disorder.
- MRI, CT scans
- Medical/Surgical reports
- Electrodiagnostics; EMG/NCV
- Vestibular testing; Audiogram, ENG, etc
- A written listing [as needed] of your current problems; onset, symptoms, surgery dates, etc.
- A written list of current medications and their dosages
- Any pain/balance/dizziness survey/questionnaires you may have been given.
Keep in Mind…
At the conclusion of your first PT session with us we will discuss your scheduling needs and coordinate an attendance plan that works for you. Office hours are broad and flexible; weekdays 8:00am to 7:00pm; Saturday appointments are also available.
Physical therapy sessions typically last 30-60 minutes, depending on your clinical needs. Most prescriptions and treatment schedules are for 2-3 visits per week, but this will vary based on your condition and physical ability.
Treatment plans usually are from 6-12 weeks with periodic re-evaluations and regular follow-up visits with your doctor.
Discharge from physical therapy is a time of satisfaction and celebration. We plan accordingly and prepare you with a home exercise program, as needed and discuss long term management &/or prevention strategies.
Physical therapy is typically covered by most insurance companies. Either by calling or coming into the facility, we will do an insurance intake. Usually within several hours our insurance specialist will contact you with all of the details of your coverage. This will include the number of visits, as well as what your co-pay amount and/or deductible will be. We do offer special cash rates for those who are uninsured or choose not to use their insurance.
We accept most Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) insurances, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, Oxford, Affinity and many more. We accept Medicare and HMO insurance plans; Workers’ Compensation and No-Fault MVA insurance are also accepted. If you find that we are not listed in your provider handbook, please contact us anyway. We will be happy to verify your eligibility.
We wish you luck and a speedy recovery.
